Bureaucracy is important. It exists to protect the public and to make sure that every dollar spent by the government is used properly and for the benefit of our people. But when bureaucracy becomes too focused on rules instead of results, it slows everything down. Over time, many public officials became more afraid of being blamed than committed to delivering. While we must continue to fight corruption, we also have to fix the slow pace of getting things done. Jamaicans don’t vote based on paperwork. They vote based on results: roads, hospitals, schools, and real projects that improve their lives. So my job is to strike the right balance, protect transparency and accountability, while also ensuring that projects are delivered faster and more efficiently.(Andrew Holness)
