[Hong Kong Police's 'Operation Shadow Hunter' Arrests 682 People, Uncovers $44 Million HKD Virtual Currency Money Laundering Syndicate] According to HK01, the Hong Kong police disclosed that over the past three weeks, they launched a citywide enforcement operation targeting fraud, cybercrime, and money laundering, codenamed 'Operation Shadow Hunter.' A total of 682 individuals were arrested on charges of conspiracy to defraud, obtaining property by deception, and money laundering, involving 580 fraud and technology-related cases with a total amount of $620 million HKD. Among these, during an enforcement action codenamed 'CyberNet' by the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong police, a local online romance scam syndicate and a virtual currency money laundering group were uncovered. Over the past 16 months, the group defrauded 314 victims of a total of $44 million HKD, with an average amount of approximately $150,000 HKD per case.
