OpenAI has released the Codex desktop app, currently available only for Mac. Apple wins big again in the AI era. How to use it? ChatGPT free users and Go plan subscribers can try it directly, while other plans get double quotas for a limited time. Download and install, log in with your ChatGPT account, pick a project folder, and you’re good to go. Supports multi-thread parallel processing, built-in Git, and sandbox isolation—high-permission actions like network access will trigger approval pop-ups, and by default, it can only access the current project directory. Key points to note: Only supports Apple Silicon; Intel Macs are out of luck. Can sync with IDE plugins, supports voice input, and MCP configurations are shared across the app, command line, and IDE. If you log in with an API key, some features are restricted, and cloud threads won’t work. Claude Code, Cursor, and now Codex App—all prioritize or even exclusively support Mac. Developer tools are leaning heavily toward the Apple ecosystem—is this because of the rising memory prices?
