Let’s see if media will ask @MassGovernor real questions about her former top advisor.
I think it’s time we revisit questions about Harvard and MIT as well.
Epstein had significant ties to both MIT and Harvard University, involving millions of dollars in donations and dozens of campus visits including AFTER his 2008 conviction for procuring a child for prostitution.
MIT continued to accept money after his 2008 conviction and went to great lengths to hide it.
MIT accepted 10 donations totaling $850,000 between 2002 and 2017. Nine of these ten donations (totaling $750,000) were received AFTER his conviction.
The MIT Media Lab, under then-director Joi Ito, actively sought to keep these donations "anonymous" in internal systems to avoid public scrutiny. Senior administrators were aware of his status but approved the gifts under an informal framework.
Epstein visited the MIT campus at least nine times between 2013 and 2017. He met with senior professors and even received a thank-you letter from MIT President L. Rafael Reif in 2012.
Harvard’s official ties were more substantial in terms of dollar amounts, but the claimed to have cut off direct donations earlier than MIT.
Harvard received approximately $9.1 million from Epstein between 1998 and 2008. The university maintains that it rejected all direct donation attempts after his 2008 conviction.
The bulk of the money ($6.5 million) was given in 2003 to establish the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics (PED), led by Professor Martin Nowak.
Epstein remained highly active at Harvard. He visited the PED offices in Harvard Square more than 40 times between 2010 and 2018. He was even given his OWN OFFICE space and a key to the building.(John E Deaton)
