According to Solanacompass data, the number of Solana validators has dropped significantly from its peak of 2,560 in March 2023 to 795 as of Wednesday, a 68% decrease. Meanwhile, the Nakamoto Coefficient, which measures the level of network decentralization, also fell by 35% during the same period (from 31 to 20). Industry participants point out that rising operational costs and zero-fee competition from large validators are forcing smaller validators to exit the network due to insufficient economic returns. Besides hardware costs, validators need to stake approximately $49,000 worth of SOL in their first year and pay around 401 SOL annually in voting fees.
