building on @karpathy's excellent post on the state of coding models.
my personal coding arc over 20 years has gone from someone who used to write a lot of code everyday to someone who wrote almost no code to now suddenly being able to generate a lot of code using llms.
over the holidays I built a little "Sims-esque" RTS game for my kids based on my household . Pro-tip: your kids will enjoy making the video game versions of you doing embarassing things over and over again. as someone who had never coded up 2d graphics/ basic game logic, I was stunned to be able to build in an hour what would have taken me weeks and then incorporate suggestions from the kids ("more bathroom trips for dad" / "more treats for the kids") in seconds.
I was struck by my coding workflow now being dramatically different from a few years ago. I find myself thrown into large amounts of code that I didnt write and have to grok/ debug/ steer and then go back to letting the model do its thing. As @karpathy says, this is a massive upgrade from even a few months ago when you would be writing most of the code.(Sriram Krishnan)
