ChatGPT is going to have ads. 800 million weekly active users, raised $64 billion, and still has to rely on ads to survive. What does this tell us? Commercializing AI companies is way harder than you think. OpenAI’s dilemma is simple: lots of users, few paying customers. 800 million people use it, but the majority are freeloaders. Subscription fees can’t cover training costs, so they have no choice but to turn to ads. They promise that 'ads won’t affect response content,' and ads will be placed separately below the answers with clear labels. The more ruthless part is yet to come: they’re also exploring 'interactive ads,' where you can directly ask questions to the ads. AI assistants turning into AI sales reps—it’s just a matter of time. Paid users won’t be affected for now. But for free users, the ChatGPT you’ll be using in the future will essentially be a chatty ad machine. This is the reality: when a product is free, *you* are the product.
