It was launched in the summer of 2025 as a 'weekend experiment project' by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, aiming to enable offline communication without the internet. During the Uganda election internet shutdown and the Jamaica hurricane disaster, the app's downloads surged, topping local app charts.
