[U.S. Republican: Powell May Miss Biannual Congressional Hearings] According to foreign media citing a key Republican lawmaker, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell may miss the upcoming congressional hearings due to a subpoena issued to the Federal Reserve by the U.S. Department of Justice, threatening criminal charges against him. Under amendments made in 1978 to the laws establishing the Federal Reserve, the Fed Chair is required to testify twice a year at congressional hearings to provide views on monetary policy and the economic situation. Traditionally, the Fed Chair attends hearings before the Senate Banking Committee and the House Financial Services Committee. French Hill, the Republican Representative and Chair of the House Financial Services Committee, stated, 'I expect Chair Powell will not attend the February hearings in the House and Senate because a grand jury has indicted him for perjury.'
