This is what a sociologist shared during an interview with Chinese media: He said (allegedly) that the University of Chicago followed investment advice from some Nobel Prize winners, invested in crypto, and lost over $6 billion, so they had to cut liberal arts programs to reduce expenses.
If this media report is accurate, I kind of doubt this sociologist has any concept of numbers...
The University of Chicago's total assets are around $21 billion, and they would dare to invest $6 billion in a single asset class like cryptocurrency??? I'm skeptical.
If the information in the article is truly what this professor said, then cutting liberal arts programs does seem justified
