[Bitcoin Core Adds Sixth Core Code Maintainer TheCharlatan After Three Years]
According to Protos, since May 2023, the number of trusted keys with permission to submit code to the main branch of the Bitcoin Core software has increased for the first time. On January 8, 2026, pseudonymous developer TheCharlatan (also known as 'sedited') joined as the sixth trusted key holder. In a group chat with other core contributors, at least 20 members agreed to grant TheCharlatan this permission, with no objections raised to the wording of his nomination. He was praised for his 'outstanding contributions to critical areas of the codebase, careful consideration of content released to users and developers, and deep understanding of the technical consensus process.' TheCharlatan graduated from the University of Zurich with a degree in computer science, focusing on reproducible software builds and the development of Bitcoin Core's validation logic.
