[Chairs of UK Parliamentary Committees Push to Ban Cryptocurrency Political Donations, Adding Pressure on Labour Government] According to The Block, the chairs of seven specialized committees in the UK Parliament sent a letter to the British government on Sunday, urging a complete ban on cryptocurrency donations to political parties. This intensifies the months-long debate surrounding digital assets in UK electoral politics. The letter, co-signed by Liam Byrne, Chair of the Business and Trade Select Committee, and six other colleagues, pointed out that cryptocurrency donations undermine transparency, traceability, and enforcement in political funding. Liam Byrne stated: 'Cryptocurrencies can obscure the true source of funds, enable numerous small donations below disclosure thresholds, and expose UK politics to foreign interference. The Electoral Commission has already warned that, with current technology, managing these risks is extremely challenging.' This move adds pressure on the Labour government. Since at least July 2025, the Labour government has been considering banning cryptocurrency political donations. Reform UK became the first political party in the UK to accept cryptocurrency donations in May 2025, and any ban would directly impact them. However, the £9 million donation the party received from cryptocurrency investor Christopher Harborne was made in fiat currency.
