2026: A year of moving from the abstract to the practical
2026 marks the evolution of AI from passive triggers to active triggers.
a16z has been super productive these past few days, and after reading their updates, here’s a quick summary:
Here’s a simplified version based on the materials:
1. AI research is not just a tool; it’s a “partner.”
AI capabilities have evolved to the level of a PhD student, capable of handling complex reasoning and mathematical problems. Future workflows will involve multi-layered AI models collaborating with each other (“agents wrapped in agents”), using encryption technology to allocate task rewards and confirm contributions, sparking cross-disciplinary innovation and discoveries.
2. From managing humans (KYC) to managing AI (KYA) with non-human identities (AI agents).
The key now is “Know Your Agent” (KYA): issuing encrypted signature “IDs” to AI, clarifying its ownership and responsibilities, enabling it to be trusted by systems and transact within networks.
3. No more freeloading—pay-as-you-go.
AI agents often bypass ads and subscriptions when accessing data, which hurts content creators’ income (aka “invisible tax”).
The solution is to use blockchain technology to establish micropayment (Nanopayments) systems: shifting from static authorization to real-time compensation, where AI automatically pays creators a small fee for every bit of data it uses.
PS: Agent payments in the crypto industry are definitely a hot topic to watch. Technologies like x402 are iterating, and with AI’s explosive growth, its future will undoubtedly integrate with crypto payments to create a closed-loop system.
