Private Equity and foreign governments are moving into college sports. The programs are so desperate for money so they can compete, they are selling their rights to investors. Is there where we really want college sports to go? Example: Utah is moving its athletics program into a new for profit entity that will be owned by the university, a private equity firm & select donors. This includes a $500M capital infusion and operational expertise from the equity firm. Now every program will be under pressure to follow this model in order to compete. We have started an financial arms race in college sports. There is such desperation to compete in the high revenue sports like football and basketball, that many other low revenue college sports are being cancelled. Many of our Olympic athletes come from those programs which are being dismantled now due to the financial needs of football and basketball.(Wall Street Mav)
