Republicans in Congress who do not call out ICE are attacking their own authority and forget their history. This EXACT thing happened with Hitler and the “The Brown Shirts”: **The Rise:** When Hitler rose to power, Germany at first still had laws and systems that pushed back against his authority, including the ways in which he could control the military and local police forces. So instead he leveraged the Brownshirts, a paramilitary organization which has the official task of being ‘bodyguards’ and ‘security’ at Nazi rallies but, was illegally used to carry out Hitler’s agenda by force. **The Silence:** Many in the German government at the time were either sympathetic to Hitler’s cause or afraid to speak out against him. So the overreach of the Brownshirts was not acted upon by the government or by local police. They shot dissenters, illegally arrested citizens and targeted critical businesses. **The Power Lost:** As Hitler’s power and influence rose, people became wary and multiple police organizations and members of government tried to take action against the Brownshirts. But, after having let it go unchecked for so long, the behavior and authority of the Brownshirts had been so normalized, that when the Brownshirts would arrest or assault these government officials, nobody batted an eye. **The Purge:** Eventually the Hitler’s power became so absolute that he no longer needed informal entities, and he created the SS to supersede the Brownshirts, and purged the leadership of the Brownshirts to prevent their influence from overshadowing him. The new SS organization had whatever legal powers Hitler said they did, and were accountable solely to him. When asked about the purge Hitler said: “In this hour I was responsible for the fate of the German nation, and thereby I became the supreme judge of the German people.” There was no authority other than him in Germany.
