[Prediction markets suggest Trump's chances of acquiring Greenland this year are low]
U.S. President Donald Trump has revisited his long-standing goal of incorporating Greenland into U.S. territory. However, traders betting real money on the outcome in prediction markets are skeptical about achieving this goal this year, while assigning a higher probability to some form of acquisition before the end of Trump's term.
On the popular cryptocurrency-based prediction platform Polymarket, traders are wagering on whether Trump will bring the Arctic island under U.S. territory by the end of this year. As of Wednesday, the probability stood at 14%, with trading volume exceeding $2 million since late December. This market is one of Polymarket's most popular betting projects recently.
On the U.S.-regulated exchange Kalshi, some traders are focusing on a longer time frame: whether the U.S. will acquire at least part of Greenland at some point during Trump's term, by 2029. Pricing in this market indicates a 43% probability, though trading volume is much lower, with approximately $644,000 in transactions over the past year. (Yicai Global)
