A frequently asked question by my friends recently is, how do I view the narrative of Ethereum?
Indeed, Ethereum focused on ICO and world computing in 2017, and DeFi and financial settlement layer in 2021. However, in this round of 25 years, there seem to be few new narratives that can compete with the old ones in terms of height.
ETFs and Staking ETFs may be considered half, but this is not within the control of Ethereum developers. If we have to talk about the other half, it can only be ZK.
There is even a joke in the community that the entire ZK narrative is paid for by Mr. V. Joke aside, Ethereum is undoubtedly the public chain with the most bets on ZK in the entire crypto world.
A few days ago, V God was quite excited and announced on Twitter that ZKEVM has now entered the Alpha stage.
Why is Ethereum so obsessed with ZK?
In fact, the TPS of Ethereum is already quite high, and the theoretical peak has increased to over 200 TPS. The reason behind this is that Ethereum has repeatedly raised the gas limit.
However, raising the gas limit comes at a cost and cannot be endlessly increased. The cost of it is that nodes need more expensive servers to run.
However, Ethereum also hopes to maintain its proud high degree of decentralization, so it cannot push the server performance of nodes too high (referring to Solana, a single server is about 5-10 times more expensive than ETH).
Therefore, it is necessary to ZK the main network. Note that it's not as simple as making a few ZK L2, this is the complete ZKization of the L1 main network.
So, what are the benefits of ZK?
Those ETH nodes can easily verify these ZK proofs without the need for tedious verification of transactions like in the past.
For example, if you are a grading teacher (node), those transactions are the students' papers.
You must have been slow to manually judge papers in the past. But since the invention of the ZK based answer sheet, the machine can calculate a student's total score in just one second. As a teacher, isn't it much easier for you?
You're relaxed now. In the past, one person could only judge 50 papers, but now they can judge 1000 papers. The person is still the same, and efficiency has increased dramatically.
So, Ethereum must first mainnet ZKization before continuing to significantly increase the Gas cap.
ZKization itself does not directly increase TPS, it is a prerequisite. Improving performance still relies on raising the gas cap, but after ZKization, nodes do not need to increase server costs too much, which makes the cost very small.
After the last Fusaka upgrade (especially the PeerDAS upgrade), Ethereum has moved one step closer to mainnet ZKization, which is why V God is so excited.
Imagine a main network with TPS breaking through a thousand, which can indeed be considered a good narrative for Ethereum.
