If you accept that government is failing and that this failure flows from the incentives created by unconstrained and unaccountable power, then the solution is to reset. Power must be limited, codified and restrained to protect the rights, property and happiness of us. Just as the Brexit Party succeeded by campaigning on a single, clearly defined objective, a single-issue party could be built around constraining government itself. Binding it forever. That mandate would be explicit and narrow: hard budget limits, strict accountability, clear limits on rule-making and constitutional restraints that apply to all future governments, regardless of party. The aim is to force the state to operate in the long-term interest of the country rather than the short-term interests of politicians, parties and/or special interests. This is not a left-wing or right-wing argument. It is an acknowledgement that the electorate always pays for bad government through inflation, stagnating living standards, cronyism, and external interference from unaccountable institutions. Alternatively, choose red, blue, green or turquoise and hope. This cycle has repeated for decades. There is no reason to believe it will correct itself. There is another option: withdraw consent from a system that no longer serves you and give it instead to a narrowly defined project that returns power away from the state and back to the public through enforceable limits. This is not just a rebellion against the machinery of the state, it is a rebellion against statists, corporate interests, corruption and international influences. Time matters. As the state, debt and infringements on our rights grow, reversing it becomes harder. Constraints are far easier to establish before power fully consolidates. Merry Christmas.
