After wearing the Apple Watch for ten years, I finally unlocked my blood sugar with CGM.
I recently put on CGM (continuous glucose monitoring) and got a needle in my arm, but I have neither diabetes nor a family genetic history.
This product requires a coin sized device to be attached to the back of the arm. It has a very thin hose implanted subcutaneously at the bottom, which is used to measure blood sugar levels 24 hours a day. This small device needs to be replaced every two weeks.
It sounds a bit scary, but my own experience is that there is no pain at all, much milder than I described.
I wear it mainly out of curiosity: I want to know how various foods I eat will affect my blood sugar? In this age of young people with diabetes, is my diet also unconsciously affecting my health?
0 ️⃣ About Background: Warning of Trillion Market Value
According to the data of IDF, the world has nearly 600 million diabetes patients, an increase of 42% compared with 10 years ago.
Capital is often the most sensitive indicator. As a giant deeply cultivating the diabetes track, Eli Lilly became the first pharmaceutical enterprise with a market value of more than one trillion dollars in history, precisely because its hypoglycemic drugs bet on the general anxiety of this era.
And Semaglutide's transformation from a hypoglycemic drug to a "weight loss miracle drug" blurs the boundary between disease treatment and body management.
Even metformin, the cornerstone of diabetes treatment, has gradually broken the simple category of "treatment" and become the focus of longevity science in recent years because of its potential anti-aging and healthy life extension effects.
Why should ordinary people pay attention to diabetes? Because in the modern society where sugar is rampant, metabolic health has become our most expensive hidden asset. Even without a diagnosis, the drastic fluctuations in blood sugar constantly exhaust our energy and emotions.
one ️⃣ Regarding Prices: From "Medical Devices" to "Mass Consumption"
With the popularization of such products in China starting from 2021, a large number of local brands have emerged, directly popularizing this category.
In fact, this category only started around 2000 and became well-known and widely used by the public in developed countries mainly in the 2010s.
In earlier years, if you wanted to use such products in China, you could almost only buy imported products like Abbott, which cost nearly 1000 yuan per month. Now choosing domestic brands such as silicon-based dynamic, Yuyue, and Weitai, the price has dropped to a minimum of around 200 yuan per month. This not only lightens the burden of diabetes patients in China, but also enables us, the "taste party", to experience at a low cost.
Even my friends in Singapore buy domestic brands from JD.com and send them over. Because the technological gap between everyone is not that big, and the numerical errors are within a controllable range. As long as they don't touch the patent wall, these new brands have a chance to make CGM affordable for people in more countries.
two ️⃣ Regarding Technology: Ideal and Reality of Non invasive Monitoring
As a ten-year user of Apple Watch, I have heard rumors that Apple has been implementing "non-invasive blood glucose monitoring" for many years, but it is still far away. It can be seen that this is indeed a necessity, but the technical difficulty is also really high.
So until Apple completes it, current home blood glucose monitoring either requires finger pricking for blood collection or long-term implantation like CGM. This is a challenge for users' psychology, but fortunately, the CGM experience has been done very well and can basically achieve no sensation.
three ️⃣ Regarding the concept: Everyone is a Biohacker
Of course, CGM's main job is to help diabetics adjust their diet, medication, and insulin dosage. But for ordinary people, it has become an inexpensive 'body dashboard'.
This reminds me of the German drama "Biohackers" and the game "Cyberpunk 2077" that I watched on Netflix a few years ago. In those works, Biohacker often means radical gene editing or body modification.
But in reality, Biohackers don't need to be so extreme. It actually refers to quantifying one's health status through data and adjusting lifestyle, diet, and supplements accordingly.
Previously, I used to monitor my electrocardiogram and sleep status through an Apple Watch, but now I use CGM to monitor my blood sugar levels. It's not really mysterious, I just want to master more data so that I can have more confidence when eating.
After all, to become a 'super individual', one must first understand their own body.
