✍️ What is the intention behind WalletConnect's dreamy collaboration with Fat Penguin?
Many people did not notice that the official Twitter account @ WalletConnect posted "Pengu Morning" 10 days ago with a picture of a chubby penguin holding a POS machine, and the Twitter avatar was also updated synchronously.
In my opinion, this is not a simple community interaction, but a carefully planned strategy: WalletConnect is becoming an on chain payment and POS infrastructure, no longer just a standard for connecting wallets and applications.
Simply put, WalletConnect aims to seamlessly bring encrypted payments to online checkout and offline POS terminals, promoting the mainstream of onchain payments, which is in line with @ pudgypenguins' vision of promoting global adoption of encryption.
The official launch of WalletConnect Pay is based on an open standard called wallet-pay, which integrates with various merchants and payment platforms, making encrypted payments (currently mainly stablecoins) as seamless, fast, and secure as Apple Pay.
Interestingly, WalletConnect Pay has been launched in some locations, such as the 94 ° Coffee shop in Lisbon, Portugal, which supports customers to make quick payments using USDC, ETH, SOL, BNB, MON, or POL.
Seeing this, you may ask: stablecoin issuers, traditional payment giants, and cryptocurrency exchanges are all making payments, what are the differences between WalletConnect Pay?
From my understanding, WalletConnect Pay is not an independent payment processor, but a protocol layer infrastructure that focuses on standardizing stablecoin payments and making onchain payments within reach.
Compared to other payment tools, the core features of WalletConnect Pay are openness, neutrality, interoperability, and decentralization. It even has a first mover advantage in many aspects, such as supporting over 700+wallets and 75000+applications, with an expected annual payment volume of $400 billion and coverage of 50 million users.
Referring to the roadmap, WalletConnect Pay plans to be fully launched in Q1 2026. At that time, I am very concerned about two issues:
① With the expansion of payment scale, WCT's security and governance roles (staking, verification, etc.) will be strengthened, hoping to truly achieve value capture
② Other payment players are busy issuing their own stablecoins and building their own ecosystem, but WalletConnect doesn't seem to have this plan, but what about the future?
