[Nasdaq Applies to Extend Weekday Trading Hours to 23 Hours]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, Nasdaq announced that it will submit a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, seeking approval to launch nearly round-the-clock stock trading. The proposal aims to extend the trading hours for stocks and exchange-traded products from the current 16 hours per weekday to 23 hours.
Currently, Nasdaq operates three trading sessions on weekdays:
- Pre-market trading from 4:00 AM to 9:30 AM Eastern Time,
- Regular trading from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time,
- Post-market trading from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
Under the proposed "23/5" (23 hours of trading per weekday) schedule, Nasdaq plans to establish two trading sessions:
- The daytime trading session will run from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM, followed by a one-hour period for maintenance, testing, and trade settlement.
- The nighttime trading session will run from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM the next day.
The daytime trading session will continue to include pre-market, regular, and post-market trading periods, retaining the opening bell at 9:30 AM and the closing bell at 4:00 PM. During the nighttime trading session, trades executed between 9:00 PM and midnight will be counted toward the next day's trading activity.
Under the new plan, the trading week will begin at 9:00 PM on Sunday and end at 8:00 PM following the daytime trading session on Friday.
