OpenAI is shutting down the Sora project.
It’s not hard to understand why—Sora’s 30-day retention rate is 1%, and the 60-day retention rate is 0%. You read that right, 0%.
Almost all users are gone after two months.
Meanwhile, the operating costs aren’t low. At its peak, Sora was estimated to cost $15 million per day.
No one wants to keep running a money-losing business, especially when AI videos still seem to be in the ‘fun and experimental’ phase, without achieving a paid PMF.
But from another perspective, AI being ‘useless’ just means AI isn’t good enough yet, the investment isn’t big enough, and the costs aren’t low enough.
