The Zcash community proposes to establish a dynamic fee market to ensure that users do not withdraw due to high fees
According to CoinDesk, Shielded Labs has proposed a new proposal to establish a dynamic fee market for Zcash to address the rising transaction costs and network congestion issues. The proposal proposes to abandon the static fee model that Zcash has always adopted - the initial fee was 10000 'zatoshi', which was later reduced to 1000. When demand is low, this model can still operate, but ultimately triggers a "sandblasting" wave of junk transactions, leading to wallet congestion and on chain transaction blocking. The previous proposal for ZIP-317 adopted an operations based accounting method, which solved the problem of abuse, but the cost remained predictable and low, and could not be adjusted according to usage.
The latest proposal introduces a simple, stateless dynamic cost design built around "comparable items", which is based on the median cost of each operation observed in the past 50 blocks, and adds synthetic transactions to simulate sustained congestion. The median cost will become the standard cost, divided into intervals to the power of ten to reduce linkability and avoid leaking user information. Under pressure, a priority channel will be temporarily opened at a cost 10 times the standard fee, allowing users to compete for block space without redesigning the protocol. The system is planned to be launched in stages. Firstly, it is monitored off chain, and then implemented as a wallet strategy. Only after obtaining approval, it will be rolled out as a simple consensus change, with expiration height limits and a power of ten fee rule set. This not only avoids the complexity and fork risks similar to the EIP-1559 mechanism, but also maintains the privacy limitations of Zcash. Other proposed ideas include using mining difficulty as a long-term heuristic indicator for fees denominated in US dollars, adjusting prices based on memory pool pressure.
