The European Union countries have been freeloading off of American defense spending for decades. While the USA spends money to defend Europe, they barely spent anything at all and instead funded a welfare state. At the same time, European policy has been to undermine the American health system, especially in the area of drug prices. Americans pay 3x more for drugs, while most Europeans mandate far lower prices. Or they just ignore patents and let their drug manufacturers produce generic drugs. American get stuck with the higher bills to pay for the R&D that went into those drugs. European countries (and the EU) have been waging economic war against the USA for decades, but we have been unwilling to fight back until President Trump started demanding fair trade deals.
