The Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI) recently called on U.S. President Trump to pardon Samourai Wallet developers Keonne Rodriguez and William Lonergan Hill. The two were sentenced to five and four years in prison, respectively, for operating an unlicensed money transfer business. They are expected to report to serve their sentences in January 2026 unless pardoned. BPI believes this case could undermine the long-standing legal distinction between software publishers and financial intermediaries, thereby stifling innovation in privacy-focused Bitcoin tools. Currently, a petition supporting the pardon of the Samourai developers has garnered over 3,200 signatures, with Bitcoin advocate Max Keiser and others publicly expressing their support.
