Openai founder Sam Altman's ex boyfriend's home was burglarized, resulting in a loss of $11 million in cryptocurrency assets
Odaily Planet Daily News: According to police sources and insiders, the residence of investor Lachy Groom (former boyfriend of ChatGPT boss Sam Altman) in San Francisco was the target of a home invasion robbery on Saturday night, resulting in the theft of $11 million worth of cryptocurrency assets. The armed robber disguised himself as a deliveryman and carried a white package. After the victim Joshua opened the door and confirmed his identity, the robber drew his gun, tied the victim with tape, and stole the victim's phone and laptop, clearing their encrypted asset account. According to police sources, the robbers stole Ethereum and Bitcoin worth $11 million, which is believed to be a targeted robbery by an organized criminal group. Insiders revealed that the attacker bound and tortured the victim, physically assaulted him, and played external sounds through the phone speaker. Someone read out the victim's personal information on the phone and then emptied the encrypted wallet within about 90 minutes. The police arrived at the scene at 6:45 pm and found that the victim had minor injuries, including bruises. The homeowner Lachy Groom (31 years old) is a venture capitalist who has dated Sam Altman (40 years old), the CEO of Open AI. Property records show that Groom purchased the property from Altman's brother for $1.8 million in 2021. According to The New York Post, Joshua is a technology investor who shares the residence with Groom. Renowned San Francisco tech investor Garry Tan shared surveillance footage on X platform and called on the public to assist in tracking the suspect. Tan suggests that self custody of encrypted assets may seem like a good idea, but it's not always the case, and it's recommended to store long-term held assets in a vault (such as Coinbase or elsewhere) for the safest option. The police stated that no one has been arrested yet and the investigation is still ongoing.
