Unformed take of the week prize goes to @ArabCenterWDC for an article full of 2021-style misinformation about Bitcoin mining that has been long-since debunked. The writer Lama Elhatow is a "Senior Expert on Environmental Geopolitics and Sustainability" yet recycles the misinformation that Bitcoin has an e-Waste problem and a water use problem, apparently unaware that she is citing debunked commentaries from 2 papers by the same author that never went through a proper peer review process in the first place. Both claims came from Alex de Vries who in 2023 had the entirety of his work debunked in a 2023 peer reviewed study. Further, the author appears unaware that Bitcoin mining has been shown in 22 peer reviewed journals and 8 independent reports to have strong environmental externalities including obviating gas peaker plants, mitigating methane and accelerating the green energy transition. This sort of effort erodes both the effectiveness of your environmental advocacy, and the credibility of Lama Elhatow who clearly has not updated her understanding of the domain she is commenting on in several years.(Daniel Batten)
