While global central banks are still watching gold, Tether is quietly "building a nation". The issuer of the world's largest stablecoin USDT is reshaping the encrypted version of the Bretton Woods system with physical gold. Its Q3 report shows that Tether's gold reserves have soared to $12.9 billion, a 140% increase in nine months, even faster than most sovereign central banks. At the same time, it has started controlling gold mines, poaching HSBC metal trading executives, and is building a "borderless central bank" anchored in gold and Bitcoin, with US Treasury yields. @Tether_to's "alchemy" is perfect: it absorbs nearly $180 billion through the issuance of USDT, invests it in US treasury bond bonds to obtain 4% annual income, and then increases its holdings of gold and bitcoin with profits, both earning stable interest and sharing asset appreciation. In the first nine months of 2025, Tether's net profit exceeded $10 billion, with gold appreciation contributing up to $4 billion, accounting for over 30%. This made Tether's valuation approach $500 billion at one point, making it a "crypto version of the Federal Reserve". But this' Golden Empire 'is not flawless either. Firstly, there is regulatory pressure. The GENIUS Act requires that the US stable currency reserve must be 100% supported by cash and short-term treasury bond, and Tether's gold and bitcoin are regarded as "non compliant assets". If implemented, Tether may be forced to "self split" in the US market, and its launch of the new currency USAT is precisely to build a regulatory firewall. Secondly, there is market risk - Tether's profits are highly dependent on the gold price and Bitcoin market, and once it enters a bear market, its "risk-free returns" will turn into profit collapse. More importantly, the compliance trend is supporting new competitors. Circle's USDC has achieved explosive growth through regulatory measures, with its circulation doubling year-on-year by 2025. The growth momentum of Tether has significantly slowed down. Tether is playing a highly intelligent arbitrage game between gold and the US dollar. It may indeed be building a 'borderless central bank', but it is also walking a tightrope - gold is its moat and a potential crack.
