[AI Godfather LeCun to Leave Meta and Found New Company Focused on 'World Models']
According to U.S. media reports, Yann LeCun, a French-American scientist hailed as one of the 'Godfathers of AI,' will leave Meta after 12 years to establish his own AI company. LeCun has long been known for his critical views, arguing that the current industry's enthusiasm for large language models (LLMs) is an 'irrational obsession.'
He points out that the true path to software surpassing human intelligence does not lie in chatbots but in 'world models'—AI systems capable of learning about the real world through video, spatial, and sensor data. LeCun emphasizes that cognitive training based on the physical world is the key to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI).
This perspective is shared by former Stanford professor and 'AI Godmother' Fei-Fei Li, who believes the next frontier for AI is 'spatial intelligence.' She argues that while LLMs are articulate, they lack experience and struggle to truly understand the world.
