The conspiracy related to ransom and digital assets in this case ultimately ended tragically. Roman Novak is well-known in St. Petersburg for defrauding investors of millions of dollars through multiple cryptocurrency projects. In 2020, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison for large-scale fraud. After serving his sentence, he moved to Dubai and founded the cryptocurrency application Fintopio, reportedly raising hundreds of millions of dollars again from new investors. In early October, Roman and his wife went to a seemingly promising investor conference in Hatta near the UAE Oman border. However, they mysteriously disappeared after changing vehicles and leaving the driver behind on the way. As several days passed and there was still no news, Roman's family issued an alert. Russian and UAE police immediately launched a joint investigation, suspecting that the couple was lured into a rented villa, and the so-called 'business meeting' was actually a kidnapping for ransom. The kidnappers attempted to force Novak to surrender access to encrypted assets - funds allegedly stored in wallets and accounts related to the Fintopio app and its early fraud projects. When they were unable to obtain funding, tragedy occurred: Roman and Anna were both killed. According to sources cited by Russian media, their bodies were dismembered and placed in containers, abandoned near a shopping center in Hatta. After the case was exposed, Russian and international media reported that the investigation has led to arrests in multiple countries. Currently, 7 suspects have been arrested, including several from St. Petersburg and one from Kazakhstan, who are charged with murder, financial crimes, and illegal fund intermediation activities.
