Bittrex Bankruptcy Filing Reveals $500 Million in Suspicious Transactions
According to DL News, Bittrex's bankruptcy filing contains tens of thousands of contradictory, suspicious, and unreasonable transaction records, potentially affecting nearly 2 million customers who had funds on the platform before the exchange collapsed in 2023.
Regulatory compliance researcher Pasha Onur pointed out that certain patterns in the documents immediately raised red flags. Analysis of court filings and Bittrex's hot and cold wallets revealed over $500 million worth of fake transaction records submitted across multiple case files.
If these transaction records are inaccurate, it could have a significant impact on creditors trying to recover funds from the bankrupt exchange. Bittrex had approximately 1.6 million users at the time of its bankruptcy filing, but fewer than 36,000 have filed claims—less than 3% of the total. Onur stated that if withdrawal transactions were fabricated, customer account balances would be incorrect, creditor claim amounts would be inaccurate, and the top 20 creditor list used for conflict checks and prioritization would also be based on manipulated data.
The deadline for Bittrex Global's bankruptcy claims was in April this year, and the exchange has yet to make payments to creditors. Onur's analysis of financial statements covers the 90 days leading up to its bankruptcy, submitted to the court in June 2023.
