[U.S. Court Rules FBI Not Liable for Destroying Hard Drive Containing 3,400 Bitcoins; Approximately 3.7 Million Bitcoins May Be Permanently Lost]
According to Cointelegraph, a U.S. court has ruled that the FBI is not responsible for destroying a hard drive containing 3,400 bitcoins.
Previously, the hard drive owner had repeatedly denied possessing a large amount of bitcoin, leading the government to abandon further investigation into bitcoin-related clues. Following notification, the FBI proceeded to clean up the disposable equipment as per standard procedure.
This incident adds to the total amount of irrecoverable bitcoin losses, which is currently estimated at approximately 3.7 million bitcoins (18% of the total supply) that may be permanently lost.
