6.5 BILLION OF DEBT ERASED FOR MILLIONS OF AMERICANS
Medical debt is one of the leading causes of financial insecurity for American families and can often come about from unexpected illness or injuries. An analysis of government data by KFF published in February 2024 estimated that Americans owe at least 220 billion in medical debt, with approximately 14 million people (six percent of adults) owing more than 1,000 and about three million people (one percent of adults) owing more than 10,000.
