While @SpeakerJohnson claims that the Dems want “free healthcare for illegals” (which is *NOT* in their proposal) the actual thing they are asking for is honestly a lifeline to Republican voters. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” is set to phase out the Obamacare tax credit, and other criteria that help reduce the cost of healthcare. The means all healthcare premiums will rise between 18%-54% in base rate while ALSO *losing* the tax credit. So in the case of a 55-year old couple they’re premiums go from: -7225/year To -24,535/year The places most affected? Red states. The people most affected? Elderly couples. So not only could Republicans have avoided this shut down themselves - but, the Dems said they’d join for one main concession: -Protecting this healthcare credit, that will have an outsized impact on the lives of Republican voters. So the Dems get a lot of shit wrong - but at least they are trying to prevent their countrymen from drowning in medical debt!(Adam Cochran (adamscochran.eth))
