[The Trump Administration Plans to Continue Tariff Investigations During the Government Shutdown]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, even though the U.S. federal government is in a shutdown, the Trump administration will continue investigations into certain imported goods to lay the groundwork for imposing additional tariffs. In an emergency plan released by the U.S. Department of Commerce on Monday local time, it was stated that the department will continue to carry out "necessary work to address the impact of imported goods on national security."
This emergency guideline reflects a subtle shift from previous plans—earlier provisions stipulated that if Congress failed to approve additional funding before the fiscal year ended on September 30, the investigations would rely on unexpired funds to continue. By invoking national security reasons, the current administration can proceed with investigations under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
At present, more investigations are pending. The Department of Commerce is evaluating whether imports of products such as lumber, semiconductors, critical minerals, commercial aircraft and jet engines, unmanned aerial systems, polysilicon, and wind turbines harm U.S. national security. (Jin10)
