Wang Yangming's philosophy of mind, in my opinion, is the most suitable for people who invest or run businesses to study. It talks about engaging with the world, practicing through real-life situations, and seeking inwardly. A lot of the principles are hard for young people to truly understand—unless they have exceptionally high perception—otherwise, it just feels like motivational fluff. For example, Wang Yangming told his students that the pursuit of inner truth should be focused and pure. He gave an example: 10 grams of gold and 10 tons of gold are both gold; but if you insist on mixing in scrap copper and iron to make up 10 tons, it’s still garbage. How do you interpret this? Just look at how many companies failed due to blind diversification. They initially found gold, but in their pursuit of scale, they turned the entire enterprise into scrap metal. How does Duan Yongping describe running a business? He doesn’t aim to be in the Fortune Global 500; he aims to survive healthily. How does Buffett describe his favorite companies? He looks for optimal shareholder returns, not blind acquisitions that waste capital efficiency. It’s the same principle. So, truly impressive insights depend on your own level of understanding. You can only grasp as much as your own ability allows. If you don’t understand it now, practice in real-life situations for a few years and then revisit it. Honestly, anyone who claims to fully comprehend the wisdom of sages is probably just delusional.
