[EU Plans to Impose 'Moderate' Fine on Google's Advertising Business] According to a report by Jinse Finance, three informed sources revealed that Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O) will face a moderate antitrust fine from the EU in the coming weeks due to alleged anti-competitive behavior in its advertising technology business. This decision was made by the European Commission following a complaint from the European Publishers Council, which led to a four-year investigation and formal charges against Google in 2023 for favoring its own advertising services and suppressing competitors. The moderate fine marks a strategic shift under the new EU antitrust chief, Teresa Ribera, in addressing violations by major tech companies. Unlike her predecessor Margrethe Vestager, who favored imposing hefty punitive fines, Ribera aims to focus more on encouraging companies to cease anti-competitive practices rather than solely penalizing them. The fine is expected to be significantly smaller than the record €4.3 billion fine imposed by the EU's competition regulator on Google in 2018.
