If Ethereum moves towards native ZKization in the future (with built-in zero knowledge proof support, such as ZK-EVM or real-time proof mechanism, to enhance the scalability and security of L1), are there still opportunities for projects currently working on ZK technology, such as Succinct and ZKSync, to benefit? There will be benefits, but the degree and manner of benefits will vary. This is mainly related to their respective positioning. For Succinct, its positioning is a universal ZK infrastructure provider, while ZKSync focuses on the L2 ecosystem.
There may be a mutually reinforcing situation between ZK proof and application requirements. For example, the implementation of ZK proofs may promote demand growth, such as cross chain, privacy protection, off chain computing, AI verification, etc., which is equivalent to creating a market for ZK proofs. Succinct's modular architecture supports the combination of web2 speed and Ethereum security, which may usher in new opportunities for applications such as gaming, social networking, AI, etc. that were previously difficult to run on the blockchain. In addition, Succinct has the opportunity to provide proof services for the entire ecosystem, not only L1 but also L2 or other cross chain projects. For example, if the Optimistic project shifts to ZK, Succinct's proof service can also be used.
For zksync, its positioning is the L2 network of the Ethereum ecosystem. As the ZK Rollup of Ethereum L2, ZKSync may have the opportunity to further reduce operating costs and enhance user experience through the ZKization of L1, while its elastic network has the potential to expand to more scenarios.
Of course, if Ethereum chooses different technological paths (such as zk STARKs or custom circuits), both will need to make some adjustments to the technology stack.
