According to a report by Golden Finance, on July 12th local time, after the United States announced that it would impose a 30% tariff on Mexico from August 1st, Mexican President Simbaum said she believed that an agreement could be reached with the United States before August 1st. During a speech at an event, Simbaum added that Mexico's sovereignty is non-negotiable.
Earlier that day, US President Trump posted a letter on social media to the President of Mexico and the President of the European Commission, announcing that starting from August 1, 2025, the United States will impose a 30% tariff on products imported from Mexico and the European Union. Trump claimed that Mexico has failed to prevent fentanyl and other substances from entering the United States, and has not done enough to cooperate with the United States in preventing illegal immigrants from entering the country.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy stated in a joint statement on the same day that the Mexican government considers this to be "unfair treatment" and that Mexico has begun negotiations with the United States to protect border businesses and employment. (Golden Ten)
