Today, I spoke with our police teams in both St. Andrew South and St. Andrew North. These two divisions are separated by a single road.
In St. Andrew South, the commanding officer reported that the division is currently holding a 5% reduction in murders. He explained how consistent police work, supported by media outreach and public cooperation, has led to the arrest and charge of several individuals, not only for recent murders but also for unsolved cases from years past. Robberies are also being addressed with urgency, just in the past three days, three persons have been charged. Technology, including tracking and monitoring tools, is playing a growing role in those breakthroughs.
When I asked about St. Andrew North, I was pleased to hear that they’ve recorded a 33% reduction in murders and a 15.2% decrease in shootings so far this year. That is commendable.
The reduction in violent crime is not a small feat. It takes leadership, discipline, and consistency. What I’m seeing gives me hope, and it should give all Jamaicans hope, that we are moving in the right direction.
To the officers on the ground, and to the commanding teams, Thank you. Keep up the good work.
