On May 28th, according to a government source cited by Asahi Shimbun, Japan has proposed to purchase billions of dollars worth of American semiconductor products as part of ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States. The Japanese government will provide subsidies to domestic companies that acquire chips from companies such as Nvidia (NVDA. O) to support the purchase of chips totaling hundreds of billions to 1 trillion yen. The Japanese government aims to use this proposal as a "negotiating card" to address the US trade deficit with Japan, which is currently around 10 trillion yen. Nvidia is a key supplier in this proposal. The plan also includes supporting the strengthening of the US Japan semiconductor supply chain through domestic production of wafers and chemicals, which is crucial for chip manufacturing.
