Most investors are asking the wrong question. When I meet founders I think about one main question: “Is this founder meant to do this?” The key is whether they're deeply connected to this journey they’re on. So I ask every founder: "Why are you doing this?" It's simple but very revealing. The entrepreneurial tourists stumble. They say, "I wanted to make money" or "My friend thought it was a good idea." But the true entrepreneurs’ hearts burst out of their chests. They say, "Because my boss did it all wrong," or "No one's seen this technology and it's incredible," or "Customers don't understand how great this can be for them." I especially love when founders say they're going to "delight their customer." Many of my best investments were into founders who said exactly that (like Elon Musk and Robin Li of Baidu), in fact.
