US cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase announced on Thursday that the company's customer data was stolen by hackers who demanded $20 million to prevent public disclosure. Coinbase stated that the hacker's request was made on Monday. The company stated in a statement that the hacker's goal was to collect a list of reachable customers while pretending to be Coinbase, deceiving customers into handing over cryptocurrency. The company refused the hacker's $20 million ransom. Coinbase also stated that it will compensate customers who were scammed into sending money to attackers, with compensation amounts potentially ranging from $180 million to $400 million.
