Recently, a controversial incident occurred in the AI entrepreneurial circle.

Li Bojie, a former "genius youth" from Huawei, became a trending topic after publicly critiquing the interview process at DeepSeek, only to later be publicly questioned by former investor Du Jun regarding alleged breaches of trust during his entrepreneurial period.

Li Bojie was one of the first members of Huawei's "genius youth" program.

This program is a talent initiative launched by Huawei targeting top young technical talents worldwide, and selected individuals usually have strong research backgrounds and technical capabilities.

Public information shows that Li Bojie has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Science and Technology of China, participated in relevant research at Microsoft Research Asia, and has published papers at top international conferences such as SIGCOMM, SOSP, and NSDI.

After leaving Huawei, Li Bojie entered the AI startup field and founded the AI project Metagent.

Why would a highly regarded figure go for an interview at DeepSeek? Who is right or wrong regarding the accusations of breach of trust against his startup?

Deepseek Interview Rejection

On July 6, Li Bojie published an article on a social platform, openly criticizing the interview process at DeepSeek.

He stated that after passing the written test, he waited a long time to enter the next round of interviews, during which offers from other companies had already been made, and the process only progressed after multiple prompts.

During the interview process, he felt that the communication experience between both sides was very unsatisfactory.

He mentioned that the earlier rounds of interviews at DeepSeek included a coding test, and in the second round, because he was using dual screens for work, his gaze occasionally shifted to another screen, leading the interviewer to suspect he was copying code.

Li Bojie stated that he explained the reason for using dual screens, but the interviewer persisted in questioning him, which led him to ultimately choose to terminate the interview process, feeling "severely offended" by the entire experience.

Investor Exposes Breach of Trust

Just as the public was discussing the DeepSeek interview issues, the situation took a turn.

Du Jun, co-founder of the Web3 venture capital firm ABCDE, publicly accused Li Bojie of lacking "contractual spirit."

Du Jun accused Li Bojie and his partner Zhuang Siyuan of failing to fulfill their obligations to synchronize financial and business progress after securing investment from ABCDE while founding Metagent in 2024, and then going off the grid.

Du Jun claimed he could accept various failures of the project, but he could not tolerate the fraudulent behavior of founders taking the money and running.

In response to public doubts, Li Bojie later replied.

He stated that he is currently serving as Chief Scientist at Pine AI, and the company's business is progressing normally; he chose to interview at DeepSeek not because of entrepreneurial failure or looking for a way out.

When he founded Metagent in 2024, the investment agreement stipulated that ABCDE Capital's investment would be 1.5 million dollars.

However, only 500,000 dollars were actually received, and the remaining 1 million dollars has never been received.

Equity and funds mismatch: Although the remaining 1 million dollars were not received, the company always recorded ABCDE's equity in the cap table according to the full 1.5 million dollars allocation.

The delay in funding forced him and his co-founders to voluntarily reduce their salaries, and the company's recruitment and development also faced difficulties.

Compliance and resignation reasons: In October 2024, unable to leave mainland China due to personal family reasons and considering the compliance risks of Web3 projects in the country, he resigned from Metagent, and this move was approved by the board.

Denial of going off the grid and breach of contract: Li Bojie emphasized that up until his resignation, as CTO and co-founder, he had been fulfilling his responsibilities of timely disclosing the cap table and business conditions.

Additionally, all subsequent projects he participated in followed non-compete clauses and intentionally avoided areas such as Web3, AI infra, and image generation.

In response to Li Bojie's rebuttal, investor Du Jun issued a strong counterargument.

Why was only 500,000 dollars given, and the remaining 1 million not received?

Du Jun stated that investment is not a one-time unconditional disbursement.

In February 2024, ABCDE initially paid 500,000 dollars, and the subsequent 1 million dollars was to be decided based on project progress, business conditions, and financial status.

As an investment institution, there is also a responsibility to the LPs (fund contributors), and it is impossible to continue adding funds when the project situation is unclear.

How is the project actually performing?

Du Jun believes that the development situation of the project after receiving the funds was not ideal. According to him, four months after the financing, in June 2024, the team only produced a "very rough" demo.

From the official social media account of Metagent, there is not much publicly available content during the entire project lifecycle, and the investors feel that the project's progress speed and quality did not meet expectations.

Why did Du Jun say Li Bojie "went off the grid"?

Du Jun claimed that starting from July 2024, Li Bojie's responses in the investment communication group noticeably decreased, and many questions were not answered in a timely manner.

He then canceled his Telegram account and exited the group chat, leading investors to believe there were serious communication issues within the team.

Why did the financial situation cause disputes?

Du Jun stated that in December 2024, Li Bojie emailed him notifying that he was leaving, and the company's funds were tight.

But in the six months following the investment, the team did not provide complete and detailed financial statements to the investors, making it impossible for them to clearly understand how the funds were being used.

This is also the core of the conflict between both parties.
