The well-known asset management company Grayscale Investments recently announced the launch of a brand new artificial intelligence cryptocurrency sector, focusing on AI-related crypto projects. This sector includes 20 selected altcoins that are considered to have significant potential in the integration of AI and blockchain. Grayscale's move aims to provide investors with a structured way to participate in this rapidly evolving technological intersection.

Digital asset management company Grayscale has announced the establishment of a brand new AI (Artificial Intelligence) Cryptocurrency Sector, incorporating 20 altcoins related to AI. This is the sixth sector set up by the company within its cryptocurrency classification framework.
The newly established AI sector is on par with the existing five categories, which include: Currency, Smart Contract Platforms, Financial, Consumer and Culture, and Tools and Services.
AI Takes Center Stage as Grayscale Launches Dedicated Crypto Sector
According to the official announcement, this new sector categorizes those tokens whose primary functions revolve around AI development or application.
Grayscale stated: “The newly added AI cryptocurrency sector reflects the growing importance of decentralized infrastructure in shaping the future of this critical technology.”

AI Apps and Agents
The total market capitalization of these 20 tokens is approximately $21 billion, making it the smallest sector covered by Grayscale.
In the newly established AI cryptocurrency sector, the largest market capitalization project is Bittensor (TAO), with a market cap of $3.8 billion. The list also includes other tokens such as Near (NEAR), Render (RNDR), Artificial Superintelligence Alliance (FET), Virtuals (VIRTUAL), and Worldcoin (WLD).

It is worth noting that in Grayscale's 2025 Q2 Asset Consideration List, Worldcoin was removed from the "Utility and Services" category, and VIRTUAL was also removed from the "Consumer and Culture" category. However, they have now returned, included in this new "AI" sector.
Although the AI cryptocurrency sector currently only accounts for about 0.67% of the total market capitalization of the entire crypto market, Grayscale remains optimistic about its future growth.
The announcement stated:
“While we are still in the early stages of the development of the AI cryptocurrency sector, the Grayscale research team believes that as the AI industry evolves and technology advances, this sector will become increasingly important.”
Grayscale also pointed out that in Q1 2023, the total market capitalization of tokens in this sector was only about $4.5 billion.
In the past two years, the total market capitalization of this sector has grown by more than four times, reflecting the increasing interest and adoption of decentralized AI. At the same time, Grayscale highlighted some upcoming key developments that could further drive the growth of this sector.
Grayscale stated:
“Decentralized AI technology is rapidly evolving. In the coming months, Grayscale research will focus on several themes: (1) Bittensor's halving event and subnet expansion, (2) innovations in distributed training, (3) signs of sustainable revenue emergence, and (4) the use of AI agents in stablecoins.”
As the AI crypto sector gradually gains attention, Grayscale emphasizes that these decentralized AI projects have the potential to address key issues posed by centralized AI, such as bias, censorship, and lack of transparency.
By leveraging the open and distributed infrastructure of blockchain, these projects aim to democratize AI ownership, ensuring that AI technology always serves the public interest, maintaining accessibility and transparency.
