Tech giant Meta has received permission from EU data regulators to use publicly shared content on its social media platforms to train its artificial intelligence models.

Meta announced in a blog post on April 14 that posts and comments from adult users on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, as well as questions and queries directed at the company's AI assistant, will now be used to improve its AI models.

The company stated, "It is crucial for our generative AI models to be trained on diverse data so that they can understand the richness, diversity, and complexity that make up the European community."

"This means including dialects and slang, hyper-local knowledge, and the unique ways different countries use humor and irony on our products," the company added.

However, Meta emphasized that private information between users and their friends and family, as well as publicly available data from account holders under the age of 18 in the EU, remains prohibited for AI training.

Users can also opt out of having their data used for AI training through in-app options provided by Meta, email notifications, and forms that are "easy to find, read, and use."

In July of last year, after privacy advocacy group None of Your Business filed complaints in 11 European countries, Meta paused its plans to use publicly shared content on its platform to train AI. The Irish Data Protection Commission (IDPC) subsequently requested a suspension of the promotion until a review was completed.

These complaints pointed out that changes to Meta's privacy policy would allow the company to use personal posts, private images, and online tracking data accumulated over the years to train its AI products.

Meta stated that it has now received permission from the EU data protection regulator, the European Data Protection Board, confirming that its AI training methods comply with legal obligations. The company will continue to maintain a constructive relationship with the IDPC.

"This is how we train generative AI models in other regions," Meta noted, "We are following the practices of other companies, including Google and OpenAI, which have already used data from European users to train their AI models."

In September of last year, the Irish data regulator launched a cross-border investigation into Google Ireland Limited to determine whether the tech giant complied with EU data protection laws while developing its AI models.

In the same month, X also faced similar scrutiny and agreed to stop using personal data from EU and European Economic Area users. Previously, X had used this data to train its AI chatbot Grok.

In August 2024, the EU launched the Artificial Intelligence Act, establishing a legal framework for AI technology, which includes data quality, security, and privacy provisions.
