At the end of September, the 2024 Tokyo Game Show (TGS) was grandly held at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. This year's exhibition, themed "Games Lead the World," attracted 985 companies and organizations from 44 countries and regions, with over 270,000 attendees, making it the largest game exhibition in Japan's history.
TGS, along with the American E3 and the German Gamescom, is one of the three major game exhibitions in the world, covering a wide range of game types, and naturally, it has become a showcase for Web3 games to compete for presence and display.
Additionally, on the eve of the exhibition, Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) announced plans to reform its regulations related to crypto games, simplifying the process for companies to handle in-game crypto assets. This reform may significantly lower the barriers to entry into the blockchain gaming market and encourage more companies to venture into the blockchain gaming field. The favorable policies for this emerging market undoubtedly provide a boost to the attending blockchain game developers. So, which Web3 games or projects are showcased at TGS? This article will review some of the participating projects.
Dark Machine
Dark Machine is a third-person shooter game based on Immutable zkEVM technology, built using Unreal Engine 5, and developed by the Dubai Web3 game studio Meta-X. As a team-based dark mech shooter, it allows for battles of up to 7 vs. 7. Dark Machine plans to conduct beta testing in 2024, with a release expected in 2025, and aims to become the world's first blockchain game supporting decentralized tournaments.

The game will also include single-player and guild modes, featuring both PvE and PvP elements. Players take on the role of deities, controlling and building their own planets, leading apostle teams to explore dungeons, and competing with other new gods in arenas. Apeiron raised tens of millions of dollars in seed funding, with investors including Hashed, IVC, and DeFiance, having raised over $24 million. Apeiron has now released a public beta version.

YGG Japan secured one of the largest booths at this year's TGS and introduced nine blockchain games at its special booth, including "Axie Infinity Origins," "Battle of Three Kingdoms," "De:Lithe Last Memories," "Kanpani Girls RE:BLOOM," and "Coin Musume." It also showcased TON ecosystem games "CATIZEN," "CatChef," and "YESCOIN." Set in a medieval fantasy world, players will take on the role of the president of an all-female mercenary company, embarking on adventures in the world of "Mysterio," filled with swords and magic. In its design, the game respects the loyal player base of its predecessor, providing enhanced content that allows players to fully enjoy the concept of "value exchange" in Web3 games and integrate blockchain technology elements to better enhance the gaming experience. Kanpani Girls RE:BLOOM was officially released on October 1, 2024.

The format of Symbiogenesis resembles a visual novel web game, officially described as an "NFT collectible art experience." Players will be able to unlock each character's story while searching for items hidden on floating continents and participating in world quests. These NFT characters will be released sequentially across six chapters, and players will be able to complete the entire storyline by advancing the main story and tasks. Teams must place and defend bombs at designated locations, requiring coordinated efforts and tactical planning. The game's dynamic maps add another layer of complexity, featuring controllable elements such as destructible barriers, hidden paths, and interactive traps. These elements ensure that the battlefield is always changing, challenging players to adapt and strategize in real-time. For players seeking a more direct combat experience, BloodLoop also offers deathmatch and brawl modes, allowing players to focus on fast-paced, thrilling battles. According to the roadmap, BloodLoop plans to release the full version of the game in the first quarter of next year, with an early access version already launched in the first half of this year.
