Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI stated at the AMD investor event on Wednesday (December 6) that they will use AMD's latest artificial intelligence (AI) chip, Instinct MI300X, in the future.

Graphics processing units (GPUs) are crucial for creating and deploying artificial intelligence programs such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. As NVIDIA's GPUs dominate the artificial intelligence market, many tech companies are actively seeking alternatives to reduce costs. The latest statements from Meta, Microsoft, and other companies are clear evidence of this trend.

The first product introduced by AMD at the event is the Instinct MI300X accelerator, which consists of 8 MI300X GPUs and can provide up to 1.5TB of HBM3 memory capacity.

Compared to NVIDIA's H100 HGX, the Instinct MI300X accelerator demonstrates significantly higher throughput and lower latency when running large language model inferences, and also performs better in various AI and HPC projects.

Analysts believe that if AMD's latest high-end chips begin shipping early next year, their performance will be sufficient to meet the needs of tech companies and cloud service providers for building artificial intelligence models, which will inevitably put pressure on NVIDIA's continuously soaring sales of AI chips.

AMD CEO Lisa Su also stated on Wednesday, "All the external interest is focused on large processors and large GPUs for cloud computing."

Challenges Facing AMD

One of the main challenges currently facing AMD is whether companies that have historically relied on NVIDIA chips for computational support will invest time and money in increasing their purchases from another GPU supplier. Lisa Su believes that AMD still needs to work hard in this regard.

Price is also crucial. AMD did not disclose the pricing of the MI300X at the event on Wednesday. However, Lisa Su told reporters that AMD's chips must be priced lower than NVIDIA's chips in order to convince customers to make purchases. It is reported that NVIDIA's GPU chips are priced at around $40,000 each.

In terms of software, AMD informed investors and partners that the company has improved its software suite called ROCm, addressing a key flaw, which is currently one of the main reasons why artificial intelligence developers prefer NVIDIA.

AMD announced the latest version of the ROCm 6 open-source software platform at the event, which has made significant progress in improving AI acceleration performance.

In addition, AMD revealed that it has signed agreements with some of the companies that have the greatest need for GPUs to use this chip.

Many Supporters

At AMD's investor event, many companies came to show their support, including Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, and Oracle.

Meta stated at the event that it will use the MI300X GPU to process artificial intelligence inference workloads.

Microsoft's Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott stated that the company will develop access to the MI300X chip through the Azure network service.

OpenAI stated that it will support AMD's GPU in a software product called Triton. Triton is not a large language model like GPT, but rather a Python-like open-source programming language.

In addition, Oracle also stated that its cloud computing will also use this chip.

Interestingly, a recent report from market research firm Omdia Research revealed that Meta and Microsoft each purchased 150,000 H100 GPUs from NVIDIA this year, tying for the top spot in terms of purchases.

This clearly demonstrates the fierce competition in the artificial intelligence GPU market.

AMD predicted on Wednesday that the total market for artificial intelligence GPUs in the next four years (by 2027) could climb to $400 billion, which is twice the company's previous forecast.

Lisa Su also told reporters that AMD does not believe it needs to beat NVIDIA in order to achieve good results in the market, but rather can occupy a good portion of the future $400 billion market on its own merits.
