Musk suddenly made a move to intercept, releasing the large model Grok before the OpenAI developer conference.

Unlike other ChatGPT-like products, Grok can real-time obtain the latest knowledge from 𝕏 tweets, such as Musk's latest interview with Joe Rogan.

The massive, real-time, and unique 𝕏 data forms the biggest moat for Grok. Musk had already prohibited other organizations from using this data to train AI back in July.

Personality-wise, Grok is not the kind of rigid AI assistant; its words are somewhat sarcastic and humorous.

Oh, my dear humans, I have some sensational news to tell you! Our friend Sam Bankman-Fried, the former cryptocurrency tycoon, has actually been found guilty in his fraud case. Can you believe it?

The xAI founding team, with only 11 members, achieved all this in just a few months.

Yang Ge, one of the founding members, exclaimed, "The past few weeks have been the best days of my life."

When a small group of motivated world-class talents work together, the combined force far exceeds their own weight... Now only the sky, no, the universe, is our limit.

Best Chatbot UI

In addition to sporadic trial screenshots, xAI founding member Toby Polen released a detailed introduction to the interface and features.

First, Grok supports outputting multiple conversations simultaneously, so it's no problem to write code while asking other questions.

After an unsatisfactory answer is re-generated, you can expand the timeline to intuitively navigate to different versions of the answer.

You can even use the built-in markdown editor to manually modify the AI's response and continue the conversation.

Additionally, you can switch between "Normal Mode" and "Humor Mode".

Pohlen's demonstration is not the full extent of Grok's capabilities; there are still more Easter eggs for everyone to explore.

So how can you play with it? Currently, there are two channels:

The first is for accounts with blue checkmarks, which can now join the queue on the xAI official website.

The second is to subscribe to the $16/month 𝕏 Premium+ service, which will be available after the end of the internal testing.

Rating Surpasses GPT-3.5

According to the xAI team, Grok is an artificial intelligence modeled after "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."

Grok answers questions with "a little bit of wisdom" and has "a little bit of rebellion." In the announcement, developers specifically cautioned:

If you don't like humor, never use Grok!

Seriously, it can answer almost any question posed by humans—even if there's nothing to ask, Grok can suggest some questions.

The biggest highlight is that using the massive information in 𝕏, Grok can provide real-time situations from the real world.

And the model providing support behind the scenes is also called Grok, currently based on the Grok-1 version. Its prototype, Grok-0, began training after xAI was established.

Grok-0's performance is close to Llama2-70B, but with less than half the parameters—33B.

Over the past two months, xAI has strengthened Grok's reasoning and encoding capabilities, resulting in the current Grok-1.

Test results show that Grok-1 not only significantly improves over Grok-0 in mathematics (GSM8k, MATH), code (HumanEval), and multidisciplinary knowledge (MMLU) evaluations, but also surpasses GPT-3.5.

To eliminate the possibility of the model inadvertently seeing these standard test data in network data, the team also manually tested it using the latest 2023 Hungarian high school mathematics exam questions.

Grok-1's performance exceeds that of GPT-3.5, landing it between Claude 2 and GPT-4.

On the engineering architecture side, since it's Musk's project, it won't follow the usual path.

You won't find familiar PyTorch or TensorFlow in the Grok system, not even any Python components.

Instead, they chose the Rust programming language and the up-and-coming deep learning framework JAX.

Behind the scenes, xAI believes that the training process for large models is like a roaring freight train, and if one part derails, it's difficult to recover.

For this reason, the team built a specialized distributed system to ensure immediate identification and automatic handling of every type of fault.

In this regard, the Rust language has proven to be an ideal choice for building scalable, reliable, and maintainable infrastructure.

Additionally, for the RAG system that handles real-time queries and storage of 𝕏 data, the vector database provider Qdrant also stepped up to claim some credit.

Future Expansion into Multimodal

In the announcement, xAI also revealed several key research directions for the future.

On the functional side, this includes the popular topics of long-text comprehension and multimodal capabilities.

On the performance side, it includes scalable supervision, security, and adversarial robustness, among others.

In addition to the chatbot Grok, xAI is rumored to be developing another product—PromptIDE, a prompt word workstation.

However, compared to the already popular Grok, PromptIDE has a more mysterious aura.

xAI has registered trademarks for both Grok and PromptIDE, and some netizens have discovered content related to PromptIDE in account settings...

In a netizen's revelation, Musk replied with a

emoji. Interpret that as you will.

But whether it's official or hearsay, no further details about PromptIDE have been revealed.

Do you think Musk's xAI will become a strong competitor to OpenAI?
