According to foreign media reports, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the manufacturer of ChatGPT, told employees this week that OpenAI's annualized standard revenue has reached $1.3 billion. Altman's statement implies that the monthly revenue of this leading company has exceeded $100 million, a 30% increase from this summer, when this Microsoft-backed startup had an annual revenue of $1 billion.

Since the launch of the paid version of ChatGPT in February this year, OpenAI's revenue has mainly come from subscription fees for AI chatbots, achieving significant growth. Last year, the company's annual revenue was only $28 million. Since the release of ChatGPT, OpenAI has become a barometer of AI demand, helping software developers write code faster or assisting business managers in quickly summarizing documents or generating blog posts and advertising materials.

OpenAI's revenue growth helps increase the company's private valuation, as the company is organizing a tender offer, allowing external investors to purchase shares from some employees—this is the second such sale the company has held this year. OpenAI employees may soon attempt to sell shares, and the overall value of the company is expected to reach or exceed $80 billion.

The rapid development of the company also demonstrates the prospects for supporting large language models like ChatGPT and similar companies. Large model technology is not yet perfect, but some developers of large language models, including OpenAI's Andrej Karpathy, have begun to refer to it as the next generation of software operating systems, as it can write and run code, access the internet, and retrieve and reference documents.

In June of this year, Altman expressed his hope to develop ChatGPT into a "super-intelligent personal work assistant." He also discussed the development of artificial intelligence hardware devices last month with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son.

OpenAI has not yet disclosed this year's cost and revenue data, which includes revenue from selling server capacity to support its AI technology. (These operations run on Microsoft's cloud servers, and it is currently unclear what proportion of revenue OpenAI derives from these transactions). Last year, the company incurred a loss of $540 million in developing ChatGPT and GPT-4. GPT-4 is the most advanced large language model the company sells. Zoom, Stripe, IKEA, and Volvo have all stated that they are using GPT-4, some through OpenAI and some through Microsoft, with revenue sharing between Microsoft and OpenAI.

Previously, in order to achieve OpenAI's ambitious goals, Altman privately stated that the company may raise as much as $100 billion in the coming years. This would be additional funding beyond the $10 billion that Microsoft has already committed to OpenAI, primarily to fund OpenAI's operations and AI technology development in exchange for the right to use its technology. Investors expect that, in addition to the ongoing employee tender offer, OpenAI will conduct another large-scale financing round as soon as this year.

OpenAI has recently achieved growth under a series of product releases, which may put it in a favorable position in competition with Google (especially with the imminent launch of the large model platform Gemini) and a smaller-scale startup company, Anthropic, which has informed investors that its annualized revenue has reached $100 million.

An internal source said that at a developer event scheduled for early next month, the eight-year-old OpenAI plans to announce improvements to ChatGPT and other features to accelerate its performance. In addition, OpenAI will release a product to reduce the cost of using its large model products. This is also a concern for many related companies, as high costs have become an urgent issue in the large model industry. Google and Microsoft have recently been trying to reduce the related costs of large model products. (Translated by Lv Ke)
